2025: 15 Year Anniversary of The Sustainable Angle

Watch: 15 Years of The Sustainable Angle

To celebrate our 15th anniversary in 2025, The Sustainable Angle is launching a special fundraising initiative to support our educational content and knowledge sharing, which has been integral and fundamental to our continued mission of driving sustainability and innovation in fashion and textiles industries and beyond.

In 2010, The Sustainable Angle was founded as a not-for-profit organisation in Switzerland to initiate and support projects aimed at reducing the environmental impact of industry and society. A strong focus on sustainability in Fashion and Textiles emerged, as well as related sectors like Food and Agriculture. Our main project, the Future Fabrics Expo, launched in 2011 and has grown to become the world’s largest dedicated showcase of sustainably and responsibly-produced fabrics and materials for industries such as fashion & textiles, home & interiors. Over 10,000 material solutions are displayed at each FFE in London, and now also, as an edition in NYC.

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re calling on supporters to help us carry on our mission and continue our sharing of knowledge, information and educational content at the Future Fabrics Expo accompanying the materials showcase: our Knowledge Hub, FFE Seminar Series and the Innovation Hub. Your contribution will enable us to continue this and expand it even more. We plan to carry on advocating for systemic change, enabling the industry to source materials solutions and seek for the fashion and textile industry to have a positive impact on people and planet.

The fashion and apparel industry are at the dawn of a new era of legislation which will have impacts felt across the globe.

The fashion and apparel industry has a vital role to play in reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, with a global industry target of a 45% reduction. A report by BCG, Textile Exchange and Quantis, Sustainable Raw Materials Will Drive Profitability for Fashion and Apparel Brands (2023), estimates that to ensure this target is met, thirty-five new pieces of legislation-linked regulations will go into force over the next two to four years.

To meet this target, fashion and apparel brands will need to convert the majority, if not all, of their raw materials to preferred (recycled and/or renewable) sources.

Any business in the industry failing to prepare for these new requirements by not implementing a preferred materials strategy, will not only risk being stuck in the bottle neck as farmers and suppliers struggle to meet the demand of sustainable or renewable raw materials, but they will also miss out on profit uplift.

Raw materials are at the heart of this opportunity.

According to the report by BCG, Textile Exchange and Quantis, investing in recycled and renewable materials now means future-proofing your business, getting ahead of the curve and securing supply for the long term. Growth is increased when all levels of regulation and compliance are met through investment and forward planning. The report estimates that a fashion brand with $1 billion in annual revenue can see net profit of $100 million over five years.

However, without commitment and investment from brands, supply chain stakeholders such as raw-materials producers, farmers, and growers don’t have any incentive to take on the risks associated with increasing the supply of sustainable and renewable raw materials, especially when their livelihoods are at stake.

Businesses must now be forging a pathway to transition to recycled and renewable raw materials which have a low-climate impact.

A Background of The Sustainable Angle

Since 2011, The Sustainable Angle embarked on a mission to transform the fashion industry, which is one of the most polluting industries. This led to the creation of Future Fabrics Expo, a one-of-a-kind showcase offering brands and designers access to certified, sustainably and responsibly produced materials.

The Future Fabrics Expo captured the imagination of those eager to redefine the future of fashion and inspired those that needed to be explained what the issues were at hand: microfibres in synthetics that are polluting the ocean, high energy consumption of clothing production, polluting industrial farming practices with high CO2 emissions used for growing conventional cotton, wasteful practices and overproduction and consumption, and low animal welfare. From the very beginning, sharing educational information has been the backbone of Future Fabrics Expo, contextualising the materials showcased and providing vital knowledge to attending fashion professionals. This knowledge sharing has made the Expo not only a dedicated sourcing platform for materials and innovations, but a key resource for learning.

As the years passed, the Expo’s influence grew, with various editions expanding its reach to global fashion capitals.

Thousands of visitors gathered to explore cutting-edge materials, connect with pioneering mills, and engage in dialogues that challenged the status quo. In 2019, Future Fabrics Expo introduced a dedicated area for regenerative agriculture, underscoring its commitment to truly sustainable solutions.

In 2022, the Expo took a giant leap forward. Moving to a 3,000-square-meter space by Canary Wharf, we welcomed visitors from around the world, showcasing over 10,000 materials and introducing new areas such as dedicated spaces for Home & Interiors, Packaging, and Footwear. With the introduction of the Seminar Series, the Expo evolved into more than a sourcing destination, it became a hub for knowledge and inspiration, where thought leaders shared visions, solutions, and learnings for a fashion industry rooted in sustainability.

The 2024 Expo continued to build on this momentum, with an impressive array of visitors, exhibitors, and innovations. The Sustainable Angle brought the Expo to New York City, hosting the largest edition ever held outside of London—a milestone that expanded its global reach and solidified its role in bridging the gap between brands and sustainable solutions worldwide.

From London to New York, Future Fabrics Expo continues to set the standard for responsibly produced materials. As we approach 2025, celebrating 15 years of driving change, The Sustainable Angle remains dedicated to spotlighting materials that not only reduce impact but create lasting change in the textile and fashion industries—for both people and the planet.
